And the Epsom Salt Oscar goes to?.

Russell Crowe for Best Feet

RUTHERFORD, NJ ? It?s Oscar time again and everyone has a job to do. The Academy Award people study plot, execution and pull. The stars study gowns, bags, and shoes. And the Epsom Salt Industry Council judges study toes, soles and heels.

?It?s an overlooked Oscar category,? said Mark Roberts, spokesperson for the non-profit Epsom Salt Industry Council. ?Sure, the movies, the stars, the gowns? they?re all important. But where would any of them be without feet? On the ground, that?s where.?

Picking the Epsom Salt statuette winner is no easy task. Council members from Florida to Manhattan carefully analyze all the Academy Award nominees.

?We watch the films and we concentrate on the stars,? said Roberts, ?but what we?re really looking at is how the characters respond in relation to their feet.?

The Council said that this year was especially hard. ?You got Julia Roberts, who probably has the most intriguing feet in Hollywood,? said Roberts. ?Then there?s Russell Crowe, whose feet are hands-down the toughest.?

In the end Crowe, won unanimously. In Gladiator, Crowe?s normally sequestered feet were plunged into the spotlight for the entire 3-hour film. He managed scorching heat, bloody brawls, and quick steps, all in flimsy sandals. Plus, although Crowe cracked a bone in his foot during the filming, his feet carried him through.

?There were times when Crowe would connect with his feet in such an intimate way? it was quite moving,? said Roberts. ?I think the audience could really feel the feet/heart/brain bond taking place.?

Crowe?s Epsom Salt Oscar will be sent to his LA address, along with a complimentary box of Epsom Salt. ?Our people called his people and we?re trying to arrange some face time. We?re hoping he?ll have an acceptance speech together soon,? said Roberts.

In the mean time, the Epsom Salt Industry Council is hoping Crowe will pause and give thanks to his feet with an Epsom Salt soak they so rightly deserve.
