Richter-Colella Studios, located in Wellesley and Peabody, Massachusetts, has announced a new specialty -- portraits of expectant mothers.
Few professional photographers document the ephemeral beauty of pregnant women. For Anthony Colella, maternity portraits are an art form. Colella takes maternity portraits in both his Wellesley and Peabody studios, and is also available to shoot portraits at alternative locations of your choice.
"Pregnancy is a very special time," says Colella. "It is only natural that couples would want a special photograph as a momento. In my portraits, I seek to capture the beauty of forming life. I am always aware that this photograph is not only a meaningful portrait of the new mother, but almost always the first picture in the new baby's photo album. Although most women feel uncomfortable having their photograph taken even when they're not pregnant, I take care to help them relax and enjoy the session."
A special fascination surrounds pregnancy and the remarkable change it brings to women's bodies. Just as maternity fashions have evolved from concealing a woman's pregnant belly to highlighting it, expectant parents have moved beyond recording their pregnancy in snapshots. Ever since Vanity Fair magazine featured the portrait of a very pregnant Demi Moore on its cover, couples have sought to capture the beauty of pregnancy in formal portraits. No longer shy about their changing shape, pregnant women now celebrate it.
"I believe there's a growing emphasis on the family and a resurgence of family values," says Colella. "I'm not sure if it's because of my Italian upbringing, or that I'm just a hopeless romantic, but I really love documenting special family moments. Although I have been shooting portraits of pregnant women for almost ten years, the growing
interest made me realize it was time to officially announce maternity portraits as a specialty service of Richter-Colella Studios."
