On a day to day basis, feet take a lot of abuse: tight fitting shoes, punishing high heels, scratchy socks or even the friction of sneakers while exercising can all lead to dry, cracked and unsightly heels. Dry, forced heat, a lack of moisture in the air and binding winter shoes and socks all contribute to skin dryness, which can leave the heels looking ragged and feeling rough and flaky. And while it is true that the skin on the heels and feet does tend to be thicker than on the face or body, it doesn't need to be dry or cracked. A few simple pampering additions to the feet, once or twice a week, will not only help banish dry skin, but keep feet in sandal-ready condition all year round.

Firstly, like any other part of the body, exfoliating this dry skin is a must. Invest in a pumice stone or foot scrub and use it two-three times per week on especially dry areas to lift off the dead skin and prepare the feet for the next step: moisturizer. Once you have exfoliated away the dry skin, locking in as much moisture as possible is your next step. A good way to drench your heels and feet in moisture is to invest in a pair of gel-lined, moisture binding socks. Worn overnight, these socks will hydrate and soften even the roughest heels, especially when used with an exfoliating cream.

To maintain these results, a daily application of a lightweight, hydrating foot cream is ideal. Reach for formulations that will absorb quickly and maintain hydration. For an extra softening treat, soak the feet and heels in Epsom salts before exfoliating, and then apply foot cream liberally, coating the heels and toes carefully. Follow-up with the softening gel socks and hit the hay! In the morning, heels and feet will be soft, smooth and refreshed! Repeat this deep-treat once a week to maintain results and ensure the heels are strappy-sandal ready, season after season.
